Event Schedule

9:00 - 10:30     “Cultural Diversity and Competence in Health Care: Models and Examples for  Practice” with Dr. A. Chan  (part one)

Topics to be covered in Key Note Presentation: Cultural awareness and competence in health care is no longer an ’option’.  Rather it is an imperative within our society today.  In order to become effective practitioners, we are required to become more proficient as cultural communicators and to examine bias and the context of cultural  differences.  In this session, models of cultural diversity and competence will be discussed.  These models will have direct application for practice.  A key concept is the goal of “integrated awareness”.  Integrated awareness refers to self awareness of one’s own culture and attitudes about culture and difference; openness to change and learning about cultural diversity; and an appreciation and acknowledgment of the political and social nature of cultured, race and difference.  Health care providers will be challenged to reflect on their own level of integrated awareness and how to make this a reality in their everyday practice.
